For the first time, the United Nations Agency for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO) celebrates World Portuguese Language Day.

This date, made official last November by UNESCO, coincides with the day that, for a decade, the day of the Portuguese language and culture of the CPLP was celebrated.

In a special message, the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, considers that the proclamation of this day is a fair recognition of the “global relevance” of the Portuguese language which constitutes “itself an affirmation of diversity.”

On 12 November 2019, the UNESCO General Conference proclaimed May 5 of each year as World Portuguese Language Day.

The year 2020 marks the first time that UNESCO celebrates this World Day, in partnership with the embassies of Portuguese-speaking countries that are members of the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries (CPLP) and with the Government of the Federal District, Brazil (GDF).

On this occasion, they also celebrate the 60th anniversary of Brasília together, one of the World Heritage sites in Brazil recognized by UNESCO.
