A friend of artist Tim A Shaw and curator Niamh White was sectioned in 2016. The ward she stayed in was cold, clinical and not conducive to recovery. Niamh and Tim decided to ask artists to transform these places so that they are restorative and beautiful

These spaces provide care to people who have severe and enduring mental health conditions and may be under a Section of the Mental Health Act, meaning they often don’t have a choice about being there. Our artists work in collaboration with patients and staff in the creation of their artworks, taking into consideration their ideas, thoughts and experiences.
Co-production
Hospital Rooms artists work in collaboration with patients and staff to ensure the artwork that is created is relevant and of interest to the people who encounter them
'Our patients have loved this process. Some, who have never engaged with the arts before, have wept tears of joy, described the workshops as ‘the best day of their lives’ and told us the sessions have eased times of utter despair.'
Harold Offeh
'There should be no barriers to culture and there should be no barriers to living and experiencing art.'
