Mariachi, Heritage of the World

In 2011, UNESCO designated "Mariachi, sting music, song and trumpet" as Heritage of Humanity. In 2020, Traditional Mariachi joined Jalisco's heritage's list, recognizing the diversity of the genre.

Both declarations are result of the determination of Mariachi musicians and tradition's bearers. For more than 200 years, they have proudly passed on their cultural legacy to younger generations.

Traditional Mariachi songs mirror believes and customs of rural Mexico. Ensembles are mostly found in the Western states of Jalisco, Nayarit, Michoacán, and Colima.

In contrast, Modern Mariachi incorporates trumpet to give its music more sonority. It also doubles the number of violins in their ensambles.
