From the first Portuguese Maestro to the present day

The Banda da Armada throughout its existence had several maestros. The first of which there is historical memory was Caetano Tozzi (Italian). 

Maestro Délio GonçalvesBanda da Armada

Pascoal Corvalini, Arthur Reinhardt and Mark Holzel were also maestros of the various musical formations of the Armada.

Maestro António Maria Chéu (1898/1912) by Banda da ArmadaBanda da Armada

Lieutenant, Junior Grade António Maria Chéu 

António Maria Chéu was born in Beja, in the parish of Salvador, on June 3, 1866.
In 1898 he was transferred to the service of the Armada and according to current knowledge, he is the first Portuguese maestro of the Banda da Armada.
Head of the Banda da Armada between 1898 and 1912.

Maestro Artur Fão (1920/1956) by Banda da ArmadaBanda da Armada

Lieutenant Commander Artur Fernandes Fão 

Artur Fernandes Fão was born in Vila Praia de Âncora on April 27, 1894. 
He devoted himself to works of musical didactics, publishing a valuable work entitled «Musical Theory». 
Head of the Banda da Armada between 1920 and 1956. 

Maestro Fortunato de Sousa (1956/1975) by Banda da ArmadaBanda da Armada

Lieutenant António Fortunato de Sousa 

Fortunato de Sousa was born in Montijo on April 2, 1914. 
The March of Sailors, written by Carlos Calderon for the film Bocage, was introduced in the Banda da Armada by maestro Fortunato de Sousa. 
He was Deputy Head of the Banda da Armada between 1956 and 1975. 

Maestro Marcos Romão (1956/1975) by Banda da ArmadaBanda da Armada

Commander Marcos Romão dos Reis Júnior 

Marcos Romão was born in Loures on March 6, 1917. 
As a clarinetist, he won all the competitions in which he took part, which earned him, later, the appointment of special professor of clarinet of the National Conservatory of Music. 
Head of the Banda da Armada between 1956 and 1976. 

Maestro Manuel Baltazar (1976/1987) by Banda da ArmadaBanda da Armada

Lieutenant Commander Manuel Maria Baltazar 

Manuel Maria Baltazar was born in Lourinhã on November 20, 1927. 
He made numerous transcriptions from orchestra to band and proceeded to harmonizations and instrumentation of our folklore. 
Head of the Banda da Armada between 1976 and 1987. 

Maestro Araújo Pereira (1987/2005) by Banda da ArmadaBanda da Armada

Commander José Joaquim Araújo Pereira 

Araújo Pereira was born in Seixas on December 27, 1947. 
He was part of the Pedagogical Council of the School of Music and Ballet of Linda-a-Velha, as Director of the Courses taught there to the students of Banda da Armada. 
Head of the Banda da Armada between 1987 and 2005. 

Maestro Carlos Ribeiro (2005/2010) by Banda da ArmadaBanda da Armada

Commander Carlos da Silva Ribeiro 

Carlos Ribeiro was born in Santa Maria de Bouro on February 4, 1953. 
He is the author of several new light compositions with discographic editing and various arrangements for band and small groupings. 
Head of the Banda da Armada between 2005 and 2010.

Commander Délio Alexandre Coelho Gonçalves 

Délio Gonçalves was born in Azambuja on October 16, 1973. 
In 2001, he finished his studies in Band Direction, Fanfare and Brass Band at the Royal Music Conservatorium in Maastricht in the Netherlands, where he studied with Professor Jo Conjaerts. 
Head of the Banda da Armada since 2010. 

Maestro José Veloso (2010) by Banda da ArmadaBanda da Armada

Lieutenant Commander José António Peixoto Veloso 

José Veloso was born in Lisbon on November 20, 1974. 
In 2004 and 2005 he participated in the "Corsi de Perfezionamento Musicale" of Orchestra de Sopros directed by Maestro Jo Conjaerts, in Spilimbergo – Italy. 
Deputy Head of the Banda da Armada since 2010. 

Maestro Samuel Pascoal (2021) by Banda da ArmadaBanda da Armada

Lieutenant, Junior Grade Samuel Filipe Santos Silva Pascoal 

Samuel Pascoal was born in Gançaria on January 9, 1986. 
As a composer, he has been awarded several competitions and his works are recorded and performed all over the world. 
Assistant to the Head of the Banda da Armada since 2020.
