The event reinvented itself during the pandemic, expanded its remit, and embraced urgent topics such as inclusion, democracy, anti-racism, and real bodies on the catwalk

São Paulo Fashion Week (SPFW) adopted the format we know today (its longest-lasting and most successful) in 2001. It inherited its structure – smaller, with fewer participants and taking place with a more traditional frequency – from PhytoErvas Fashion and MorumbiFashion Brasil.

The great São Paulo catwalk has also featured an array of foreign fashion editors, artists, and designers like Isabella Blow, Iggy Pop, Donatella Versace, and Vivienne Westwood, names in national fashion, and a cast of heavyweight national and international models such as Gisele Bündchen, Naomi Campbell, Candice Swanepoel, Karolina Kurkova, and Kate Moss. It has become the largest fashion event in Brazil and Latin America and the fifth-largest fashion week in the world.

With each event, the São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro fashion shows have developed a more robust business model, made a name for themselves on the international calendar, and witnessed the rise of new talent. But above all, they have witnessed and shaped changes in customs and values.

This major ethical and aesthetic transformation has led to inclusion playing a stand-out role in recent years. One example took place on the first day of the 26th annual event in 2009, when 20 black models staged a show in Ibirapuera Park to protest the almost complete absence of black and indigenous participants.

Designers and creators have incorporated other issues such as indigenous rights, upcycling (recycling textile leftovers), fashion circularity, sustainability, the climate and environmental crisis, labor akin to slavery, racism, and marginal talent.

With its ups and downs, SPFW has navigated the decades with grace and controversy, but without missing a beat. One such low point was the COVID-19 pandemic, which cast a dark shadow over the world, but not over the creativity of SPFW, which held online versions of the event in 2020 and 2021.

One of the most iconic SPFW shows was the one marking Jum Nakao’s farewell, where models with Playmobil-like plastic wigs showcased an all-paper collection, which was torn apart at the end of the show. This was Nakao’s way of questioning the direction of the industry.

And since inclusion is a mandatory and non-negotiable topic, the catwalk has provided many examples of this over the years.
