Chula Art Park Day & Night

Chula Art Park consists of 15 sculptures created through the cooperation of Council of Arts and Design Deans of Thailand. The objectives of this innovative inaugural research project feature the use of art and design to enhance both the economy and quality of life of locals in the Samyan - Suan Luang community.

The aim is to edify the community and its visitors about its history and to improve the local economy through increased visitor traffic. The installations are viewable 24/7 and feature solar-powered integrated lighting for nighttime visitors.

This park also aims to create a relaxing and attractive “decompression” space at night for locals and tourists with many famous restaurants to explore nearby.

Concept

The sculpture reflects the Chinese way of life, using tea drinking as a symbol of friendship and family ties. The table, chairs, charcoal stove, clay kettle, and tea set in the sculpture are made of fiberglass.

Concept

The artist appreciates the aesthetic beauty in the way of life of the Chinese-Thai community of Samyan. Their beliefs and faith are interesting and customary, as their rituals are performed according to traditions passed down from generation to generation.

These characteristics have inspired the artist to create the set of artworks “Thai People of Chinese Descent: Way of Faith” to represent the way of life and the trading business of the Thai people of Chinese descent in the Samyan community, and to relate their culture, beliefs, and faith, which have been passed down through generations.

Concept

This artwork is a sculpture in the form of a star which is meant to be installed in a real venue. The star shape is used to symbolize the culture of goodness in the Samyan community which has passed through long times of changes and development.

Today, the residential area has changed, the artist then creates his sculptural artwork using the star symbol to represent the good culture of the community. The proper contemporary materials are used to create the sculpture.

The “City’s Lungs” artwork presents a rabbit and a golden lotus to suggest the development of the old community into a modern district, a center of business and city of the future.

“Reflection of a Little Squirrel” is a sculpture that depicts a squirrel, an animal often found on the rain tree, which is the official tree of Chulalongkorn University and is a part of the green natural environment of the area.

“Station” is a site-specific artwork creating conversations and interactive experiences between viewers and the venue, and stimulating their recognition of the Samyan - Suanluang area’s landscape and soundscape through the form and meaning of the sculpture, which represents the culture of the community.

Concept

This light sculpture project is inspired by an interesting area in Chulalongkorn University's Centenary Park called Yaek Saphan On, which was originally home to various connecting canals and a community. The area has seen significant changes and development during the past 100 years.

Saphan On is the name of a bridge once located in the area but now replaced by Banthat Thong Road. Accordingly, this artwork has used the name and the bridge function to show the link between past and present. Movable lights signify the changes of the area and the communities, and mixed media techniques and modern materials in minimalist style are also used.

Concept

City Center's Flower is a sculpture of a flower with three heart-shaped petals made from used car parts, a reference to the Suanluang Xiang Kong area’s old function as a business center for spare parts for vehicles.

Concept

The artwork consists of 2D and 3D mixed media sculptures on a wall shaped like an infinity sign, signifying the endless development of Samyan’s prosperity into the future.

The sculptures are based on universal design principles that allow for the perception of knowing, seeing, touching, and hearing, including braille type for those with visual impairment, and can be appreciated day and night.

Concept

“Sam Yan Heaven Gate” is an art project that represents the concept of cultural integration. The images of the khong arch and paifang, both Thai and Chinese concepts about land borders, are used in the designs to represent cultural fusion, influenced by immigration and assimilation of various people.

Concept

The artwork is an octagonal stall imitating the red paper lantern that Chinese people often use to decorate their houses during festivals. The stenciled designs of auspicious beasts and guardians of the four directions, flowers, and eight Chinese-language characters with auspicious meanings adorn the stall, signifying a gathering of auspicious beings.

Concept

“Junk” is an innovative 3D mixed-media kinetic sculpture in the shape of a boat, inspired by the Chinese vessels of the past, with open space inside where people can sit or lie down.  The installation is equipped with a coin-operated machine that narrates short stories about the struggles and efforts in the lives of people in the community, read by children in community schools.

Borrowing ideas of children’s play and blending it with the culture of the Samyan-Suanluang community, a mixed media 2D animation design was created using an old-fashioned 2D-animation machine (Zoetrope) mixed with readymade sculptures.

Concept

The ways of life and beliefs of Chinese-Thai people in the Samyan community have left traces of Chinese culture in handicrafts and various equipment through the original processes and traditions. “Aura of the Chinese Dragon” recalls the handicrafts with traces of Chinese culture in Samyan.
