The early cartoonist days

Born in Arequipa in 1886, Julio Málaga Grenet showed an interest in drawing and caricature from an early age and began publishing his work in newspapers and magazines at the age of 18. His work reflected the debates and political and social tensions of his time, and he became one of our most important cartoonists.

Working abroad

He worked successfully in Buenos Aires, New York, Paris and Madrid. He was Professor of Graphic Arts and Vice-Director of the School of Fine Arts, and in 1956 became its acting director.

The beginnings of a career

From school cartoons to publication in magazines and newspapers.

“My first caricature […] deserved the kick from critics,” is how Málaga remembered what happened when he was discovered making the caricature of the Principal of his school.

He went on to study drawing at the Concha Academy, but ended up working as an office clerk until the magazine Actualidades published a drawing of him in its pages.

The critical eye of Malaga

After leaving Actualidades, he became artistic director of the magazine Monos y Monadas. In this weekly, he presented the most critical view of Malaga, addressing current events in Lima society and questioning Pardo, Leguía and the oligarchic Civic Party, which only looked after its own interests.

The details

In the image, a man (President Prado or Mayor Elguera) talks with a battered woman (representing Lima).

In Lima in 1906, bubonic plague and tuberculosis broke out, and tram travel was conducive to contagion (‘Emilio’ may refer to the tram lines) (Hersburgh Libraries).

Two Chinese men

Two Chinese men are talking, the one approaching the policeman speaks in Chinese, and the angry policeman calls him a "macaque", an insult to Chinese immigrants at the time. The cartoon shows how even established immigrants mistreated newcomers.

Political turbulence in the country

At Variedades he wrote the covers of the magazine and the ‘Chirigotas’ section. In this medium he also exercised critical thinking, aware that the media formed opinion in the face of the discussions about political power at the time.

Variedades No. 1

First cover that Málaga made for the magazine Variedades in 1908. It shows five politicians in costume at a meeting. Possibly it means that they sought to mask their interests, but everyone knows who they are.

Discussion period

The cover refers to the elections of senators and deputies carried out that week without setbacks. The image mentions Durand (probably the character carried on shoulders), a politician who carried out uprisings against different presidents.

The elections

The elections passed without incident, but on the day of publication (29 May) President Leguía was kidnapped. This reflects the turbulent political scene at the time.

In an interview with Alfonsina Barrionuevo, she asked him, if he was not an artist, what he would have liked to be, to which he replied: "[...] anything but a hat, because it could very well fall on some aristocrat's head and...! I'm afraid of emptiness! (Caretas, n. 92, year V, p. 38)

La Crónica

La Crónica appeared in 1912 and was an important newspaper of the 20th century. Málaga collaborated with it after his return from Europe, publishing portraits of politicians and society figures. In them he expressed his sharp critical eye and his capacity for psychological analysis of the sitter.

La Crónica (May 26, 1944)

Morning edition of La Crónica on May 26, 1944. We can see that the news is related to the events of World War II.

My country

We also see on this cover one of the caricatures of Málaga, that of Dr. Luis Alayza and Paz Soldán. With this it is announced that the third series of his book Mi pais has just appeared and he is described as a “brilliant nationalist writer.”
