1. Tajuña Greenway

Until 1953, a narrow-gauge train was operated along the Tajuña Valley, starting out from Retiro Park in the centre of Madrid. It was called the “Tren de Arganda, que pita más que anda” (“Arganda Train, which whistles more than it runs”) and hauled beetroot and other produce from that fertile area. It was supposed to continue as far as Aragon but never got any further than Alocén, Guadalajara.

An interesting stop where you can enjoy a 360º view of the old Ambite Train Station. It now houses a cafeteria, swimming pool, and, alongside the passenger building, the Vega del Tajuña Nature Centre, where you may rent bicycles. You’ll see them if you continue touring in Street View.

Handcycles are ideal for travelling along the Madrid Region’s Greenways. The old railway lines, with their gentle slopes and wide bends, are accessible itineraries for everyone, including persons with reduced mobility.

2. The 40 Days Train Greenway

In Carabaña, at km 35 of the Tajuña Greenway Vía Verde, we can connect with The 40 Days Train Greenway, a highly recommendable 14-km branch that’ll take us as far as Estremera through spectacular, tall trenches, olive groves, farmland, and Mediterranean landscape.

3. Guadarrama River Greenway.

The small Guadarrama River Greenway is the perfect riverside getaway along the middle course of this Madrid river. You can reach it by Cercanías train from Móstoles-El Soto. It ends at a 19th-century iron bridge right in the Nature Park –what a surprise!
