The European Centre for Environment and Human Health

At the University of Exeter, the European Centre for Environment and Human Health conducts world-class research into the connections between the environment and health.  We’re analysing the risks and benefits the environment poses to health,  ensuring our findings have relevance to the UK’s business community.

Alongside Cornwall Council and others we have developed a climate change and health adaptation decision support tool for local authorities and organisations showcasing future temperature averages in different regions of Cornwall.

This cutting-edge prototype tool presents climate change forecasts for local areas, the expected impacts on health and wellbeing, and suggested adaptation priorities.

From cutting-edge climate research at the European Centre for Environment and Human Health to educating girls and women via Tremendas Academia Climaticas in Chile, knowledge and education have an important role to play in tackling climate change and ensuring a gender inclusive approach to sustainability.

What is the Climáticas Academy? (2021) by Ionel PopUnited Nations Climate Change Conference COP26

A gender-based approach

The Tremendas Foundation, believes that climate action and gender equality are essential to move towards sustainability and social justice. That is why we created Climáticas Academy, an institution which focuses on educating girls as part of the solution to the climate crisis.

We want to train girls and young people to become advocates and experts so they can lead in climate action spaces and create change, through their knowledge and development of projects and solutions with socio environmental impacts.

Knowledge sharing to empower

We looked for the best professionals in topics like innovation, oceans, soils, forests, responsible consumption, climate change with a gender equality perspective, to help run the Academy. During its first phase 600 students are learning in all of Latin America for 14 weeks.

Tremendous results

Climáticas Academy sought to educate in the midst of the pandemic, because we could not stand idly by. We can't afford to wait, change is today. And the results were amazing, even though the classes were made on a 100% virtual learning platform.

While institutions are educating future generations about how we can care for our planet, critical research is being conducted by medical experts and charities, like Impact on Urban Health, a partnership between Asthma UK and the British Lung Foundation. It investigates how we can work towards curbing the most harmful effects of climate change on human health.

How Pollution is Impacting our HealthUnited Nations Climate Change Conference COP26

Impact on Urban Health

It’s unacceptable and unfair that people have no choice but to breathe dirty and dangerous air. In the UK, road traffic is a leading source of the air pollution that damages people’s health and the climate. People living in the poorest communities are most affected, along with people with lung conditions, pregnant women, infants and children and the elderly.
