Starting in 1982, the Fondazione De Fornaris acquired a considerable body of works, but it lacks a museum of its own. The entire collection is on loan to the GAM - Galleria Civica d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea of Turin, where the paintings, sculptures, installations and graphics can only be displayed on a rotating basis and for limited periods. Consequently, to enable art lovers from all over the world to become acquainted with the most significant exhibits of the collection, an innovative virtual museum has been designed, allowing visitors to explore its various rooms and experience masterpieces as if in a "real" museum. The architectural layout of the Virtual Museum of the Fondazione De Fornaris has been modelled following the rooms of the GAM. The museum can be visited using a standard PC or Mac, as well as by downloading a smartphone or tablet app (Museo virtuale De Fornaris). An immersive experience through 3D virtual reality viewers is available. All the paintings are viewable in high definition, and sculptures can be explored from 360 degrees. Every work is described in detail and some feature "hotspots" with additional insights. The visit also includes an outdoor tour of the GAM, where several of the Fondazione's sculptural works can be viewed.
