Music can entail vastly different sounds and tonalities. In a visual sense, a rather similar experience can be seen through art depicting music-related themes. Here, pieces that pay homage to the art of music, as celebrated over the course of history are on display

Still Life with Musical Instruments and Books, Bartholomeo Bettera, Mid-17th century, From the collection of: The Israel Museum, Jerusalem
A still life representation of European classical instruments is depicted. The instruments are not at play but rather rest motionless with no musicians represented. A contrast to the perceived norm of musicians at play perceived in art.
Musical Instruments, Andreas Feininger, 1950-09-09, From the collection of: LIFE Photo Collection
In vein of Bettera's piece, a 1950's photograph of various instruments are laid out in an overhead view. No individuals are present in the photograph. Prominent presence of brass instruments is notable.
The Music Lesson, Gerard ter Borch, about 1668, From the collection of: The J. Paul Getty Museum
A man teaches a woman to play music through a lute-type instrument. This piece depicts the exploration and development of musical ability in a private, domestic setting. The sheet music provided by the teacher apparently contains a highly detailed and lengthy song.
Kingdom of musical flowers. Bomb-free universe, Nicola De Maria, 2004 - 2004, From the collection of: Fondazione per l'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea CRT
A drum set with an elaborately colored kick drum sits beside a wall painting of similarly colored shapes and patterns. Floral and astrological shapes decorate the wall. A connection between music and a peaceful "bomb-free" state of existence is open to interpretation.
Music, Tereza Petricková, 1992, From the collection of: The International Museum of Children's Art
In contrast to still images of instruments, the lively 1990's painting by Petrickova simply entitled "Music" lacks any depiction of musical instruments of any kind. Instead, several animated individuals are seen dancing to music apparently heard apart from a live performance as speakers from the upper corners of the piece pour color into the scene.
Princess Listening to Music, Indian, c. 1775 - 1780, From the collection of: The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
An Indian princess listens to music performed by four of her royal subjects. A lush landscape is seen beside them. The princess herself appears to bear a somewhat neutral expression regarding the scene at hand.
Small Party in the Garden With Music, Kim Hong-do, 1745/1806, From the collection of: Korea Data Agency
Small Party in The Garden With Music depicts a peaceful scene beside what appears to be a garden. The scene features classical oriental instruments as presented in a performance-type fashion before the couple at rest. The proximity of the bottom two musicians may imply that a different or unrelated musical piece is being performed by them.
Country And Western Music, Michael Rougier, 1969-08, From the collection of: LIFE Photo Collection
Michael Rougier captures a modern-day music recording session through photograph. As the title suggests, two country artists are seen standing behind a piano. Simultaneous recording of vocals and piano music is implied.
The Dayak Plays the Musical Instrument, Yeh Chi Wei, 1915 - 1981, From the collection of: National Heritage Board, Singapore
Somewhat abstract in form, The Dayak Plays the Musical Instrument depicts a native Indonesian man or woman playing a large instrument in a rear-facing position. Dark colors are contrast by the lighter background. The depicted individual does not appear to be performing for anyone in particular.
Music Machine, Sonni, 2010/2013, From the collection of: graffitimundo
This 2010's piece celebrates various analog-based recording formats (vinyl and cassette) in a colorful animated fashion. Objects featured in the piece are given cartoon-like facial features. Analog-based playback functions such as pause, rewind, and fast forward are also featured.
