The crucifixion of Jesus has been depicted in religious art since the 4th century. My gallery includes many different paintings of Jesus Christ being crucified. It focuses on the art that the crucifixion appears in during the 1800's to late 1900's. The crucifixion of Jesus appeared repeatedly as a theme in many different forms of art with many different types of mediums. This type of art isn't just made to represent his resurrection. It is meant to show his suffering.

Crucifixion of Christ, George Bellows, 1923, From the collection of: Amon Carter Museum of American Art
This here is a painting of the Crucifixion of Christ made in 1923 by George Bellows. The medium of this painting is a lithograph. I think the color of this lithograph is really a big factor. It is black and white, which gives us the idea of how dark of a time it was when Jesus was crucified. Every person in the painting seems to be looking towards Jesus while the other two crosses are faced in different directions. This makes Jesus the emphasis of the lithograph.
The Crucifixion, Sir William Blake Richmond, 1891/1904, From the collection of: St. Paul's Cathedral
This piece is a painting of the Crucifixion of Jesus that was made from 1891-1904 by Sir William Blake Richmond. It is a big epic painting that sits on the roof of St. Paul's Cathedral. It is filled with many different colors that really bring your eyes from one point of the painting to the other which gives it rhythm. This is a painting where a lot of stuff is going on. The most spacious area in the painting is where Jesus is, which makes him the emphasis of the painting.
Crucifixion with Mary Magdalene Kneeling and Weeping, Francesco Hayez, 1827, From the collection of: Museo Diocesano Milano
This is a painting of Jesus and Mary (his mother) finally alone after the torture took place and the crowds have gone. The photo has more of an sunset color tone to it making it more calm. There is plenty of space surrounding Jesus and Mary in the photo making you only focus on them. This photo is supposed to make you feel sorrow for Mary, and see Jesus' suffering.
Pietá, Pierre Bonnaud, 19th Century, From the collection of: Dionísio Pinheiro And Alice Cardoso Pinheiro Foundation
This is a painting of Jesus being taken off of the cross titled "Pieta" by Pierre Bonnaud in the 19th century. This painting mainly emphasizes on the people and their emotions after Jesus was crucified. The way that the painter made you focus on the characters more was by color, because the painting is very dark overall, but there are gold and yellow like hallows around each persons head.
Crucifixion, Mosè Bianchi, around 1879, From the collection of: Museo Diocesano Milano
This is a painting of Jesus on the cross while his Mother Mary is below weeping by Mose Bianchi in 1879, titled "Crucifixion." In my opinion this painting is very intense because it is windy, stormy and the colors are very intense with the bright orange and the grey sky. It is suppose to show the suffering of what both Jesus and Mary had to go through.
Christ in the Realm of the Dead, Joakim Skovgaard, 1891-1894, From the collection of: SMK - Statens Museum for Kunst
This is a painting of the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ by Joakin Shovgaard titled "Christ in the Realm of the Dead". This painting was made from 1891-1891. It is a very epic painting of Jesus on the cross surrounded by people with very intense colors and emotions. The rays of yellow light coming from Jesus in this painting cause a rhythm by bringing your eyes from one point of the painting to the other. This also makes Jesus clearly the emphasis of the photo.
Snow is falling, Ivan Generalic, 1973, From the collection of: Koprivnica Town Museum - Gallery of Naive Art, Hlebine
This piece is a painting titled "Snow is Falling" by Ivan Generalic made in 1973. It is a painting of Jesus on the cross with nobody surrounding him while its snowing, but in the background there is a lady with animals and a village farther in the distance. The snow is falling almost directly on Jesus making him the emphasis of the painting. This painting is meant to describe human helplessness and loneliness in adversity and distress.
Plate 27: Christ Crucified: From Portfolio "Spanish Colonial Designs of New Mexico", American 20th Century, 1935/1942, From the collection of: National Gallery of Art, Washington DC
This is a painting of Jesus Christ on the cross titled "Plate27: Christ Crucified." It was made from 1935 until 1942. The medium of this piece is screenprint on paper. I think the colors in this painting have the biggest factor. Jesus's body in this painting is mostly pink, with outlines of red. Which gives the painting more of a painful feel to it.
Quadripartite icon with Crucifixion, Unknown, 19th century, From the collection of: Maryhill Museum of Art
This is a painting of Jesus Christ on the cross titled "Quadripartite icon with Crucifixion." The artist of this painting is unknown and it was made in the 19th century. This seems like a very rich and monumental painting because of its gold color. Many important people in Jesus's life surround him in this painting, making it emphasize on him.
jesus on the cross, Josip Generalić, 1946 - 2004, From the collection of: Galerija Josip Generalić
This is a painting of jesus on the cross surrounded by flowers titled "Jesus on the Cross" by Josip Generalic in 1946. On top of this painting there is plenty of white space surrounding the cross which makes Jesus and the cross the emphasis of the painting. There are many flowers surrounding Jesus on the bottom of the painting which can represent life in some sort of way.
