"In India, we celebrate an annual kite festival that takes place during the months of spring when it’s cooler and windy. During the celebration, there are colors everywhere and we welcome spring and the brand new circulation of new births and growths. My inspiration however is the free flow of colors and the abstract nature of it. It’s how the kids and adults played and lived callously without any worry in life." -Veda Saravanan

"This represents how much damage humans do to this world. Every organism in this world depends on each other, but humans tend to want a lion's share of everything. "This is my neighbor and friend, J. Boyer.

As his neighbor for a little more than 18 years, I have come to know Jan as a kind, caring and generous man. Mr. Boyer is old enough to be my father, yet he can still out-work anyone half his age. He has earned his living as a landscaper, and has made a good life for himself. Mr. Boyer single handedly designed and constructed a large waterfall display at his commercial property on Old Pineville Road, solely to provide beauty for commuters and passerbys. He maintains a robust garden and provides his neighbors and charitable organizations with fresh vegetables. Should you happen to have a conversation with him, you will surely learn about his amazing mother, how he tends to his cats, and perhaps you'll hear a bit about how he was a championship Ballroom Dancer, a hobby he took up in his 50's.

At his age, he surely went through his formative years in a time when he and my father were not very likely to have been friends. At one point they could not, or perhaps would not share a drink from the same fountain, or a seat on a bus. But I am delighted to have experienced Mr Jan as someone who would make fun of my inability to keep a green lawn, mock me for planting a bush in the fall, that would die at first frost, and give me grief for not rotating my tires on time, just as my father would have. Mr. Jan is the same old salt to everyone. Proud to be his neighbor." -Marvin Espy

"This hand carved, relief print is based on my own memories of sitting at my grandmother's table. In the South, biscuits are an accompaniment to almost any meal at any time of day. Here I am connecting to the ideas of "passing down" information from one generation to another and the importance of simplicity." -Bailey Wingler

"Gather Round" was created as part of a mixed-media, photographic study of the formal table and the family dining experience. Here fabrics, paintings, hand pulled prints and objects have been layered both physically and digitally to create the end result.- Bailey Wingler

American mothers are expected to fill a multitude of roles, many of which intersect in challenging ways. From mother to sexual object. From homemaker to professional. "Mom," is intended to highlight these dichotomies in a way that is both humorous and chaotic.- Bailey Wingler

This 6ftx18ft oil painting is a statement on the life of a commuter, suburban sprawl and reverse culture shock. It is the intersection of three stories: a universal story, a cross-section of the day-to-day world we experience on the way from point A to point B; a personal story, about my move back from Prague, in the Czech Republic, to this strange new/old place where I was born called the USA; and finally, an accidental story, our impact on the environment and each other - an inter-dependency of natives and transplants familiar to most Charlotteans. This subject although serious and maybe a bit sinister in many ways is also told with a sense of humor.- Holly Spruck
