Origins

You are only partially correct if you assume the gola ganda is an invention of the subcontinent. While it has been modified and adapted according to the geographical location and regional preferences, the very first ice-based dessert was invented by the Roman Emperor Nero, circa 27 BC, who first suggested that fresh snow be collected from the mountains and flavored with honey and fruit.

Centuries later, the Japanese learned to preserve ice in icehouses, making it an expensive treat only for the royals.
 
Since then, the American snow cone, Korean bingsu, and Peruvian raspadilla—akin to our timeless gola ganda—have become prominent players on this frozen stage.
