The sailing culture in Cabedelo - Introduction

Sailing in canoes and caicos already had its heyday at the mouth of the Paraíba do Norte River. However, in the last two decades, this practice has been re-signified.

Introduction

The exhibition addresses the tradition of sailing in the Jardim Manguinhos neighbourhood, at the mouth of the Paraíba do Norte River, presenting its importance for the maintenance of the material and immaterial culture of the city, located in Paraiba State, Northeast of Brazil.

Excluded from the dominant narratives, the artisanal fisherman and a multitude of social agents lack the insertion of themselves in the historical process of formation of the Cabedelo identity, despite their presence in the local economy and culture.

There is a growing possibility of losing, over the years, techniques, crafts and traditions that are increasingly in disuse, such as sailing in small boats, to the detriment of the use of the sterndrive engine.

In this sense, preserving the record of this knowledge in museological institutions becomes a cornerstone for the protection of the culture entangled to the city.
