The Triennale is the fruit of the transformation and relocation to Milan of the Biennial Exhibitions of Decorative Arts of Monza.

In 1929, the Italian State gave its final acknowledgement to the event, establishing that it should take place every three years and no longer every two. Two years later, the exhibition welcomed its own independen institute, named “Triennal International Exhibition of modern decorative and industrial arts and of modern architecture”, a full-fledged legal entity with headquarters relocated from Monza to Milan, in a building realized thanks to a donation by Senator Bernocchi.

The Palazzo dell'Arte building works: the honour square

In May 1933 the 5th Triennale is held in the new Palazzo dell’Arte, projected by Giovanni Muzio and built in two years from autumn 1931 to spring 1933.

Ever since its first edition in Milan in 1933 the Triennale has distinguished itself for a keen interest in the artistic and architectural scene in a variety of countries. The Bureau International des Expositions - B.I.E., the official international bureau that links and coordinates the various national agencies, has recognized this uncanny quality of the Triennale di Milano, designating it as the only Italian institution for the organization of temporary exhibitions on a global scale.
