Early Influences Award

Recipients of the 2022 Early Influences Award are Elizabeth Cotten and Harry Belafonte. The Early Influences Award is given to artists whose music and performance style have directly influenced, inspired, and evolved rock & roll and music impacting youth culture.

Harry Belafonte emerged as a strong voice during the civil rights movement. Belafonte and Tony Bennett were among thousands who marched from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, on March 25, 1965, in support of civil rights. Bennett had this bust sculpted for Belafonte in 2017.

Ahmet Ertegun Award

Winners of the Ahmet Ertegun Award for 2022 included Allen Grubman, Jimmy Iovine, and Sylvia Robinson. The Ahmet Ertegun Award is given to non-performing industry professionals who have had a major influence on the creative development and growth of rock & roll and youth culture.

Musical Excellence Award

Winners of the 2022 Musical Excellence Award included Judas Priest and Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. The  Musical Excellence Award is given to artists, musicians, songwriters, and producers whose originality and influence creating music have had a dramatic impact on music.

Harris said of their signature look, “We wanted to dress nicely...So we would go to vintage stores and buy suits...Also, those stores always had hats, so we would always get hats to go with the suit...I don’t know where the sunglasses thing came in...we didn't really plan it."

Judas Priest's 15th studio album Angel of Retribution marked the return of original lead singer Rob Halford after a 12-year separation. “Judas Rising” is about the Judas Priest Messiah on the covers of Sad Wings of Destiny, Painkiller, and Angel of Retribution.
