He is well known for his abstract works
made of repetitive blocks, such as bricks and metal plates arranged directly on the floor. Since the early 1960s Andre focused on sculpture and poetry, sometimes called “typewriter drawings”.
He is widely recognized as one of the leading figures of Minimalism. His work is marked by an interest in the inherent physical structure of the materials, often industrial, and the architecture surrounding the object.
The typed works on paper are some of Carl Andre’s earliest works, which began in the late 1950s; in this show there will be a selection of works that go from 1958 to 1963, a time when the artist was living in New York and sharing a studio with Frank Stella. Each poem has been typed on a manual typewriter, and can be read as drawings, or aloud as poems, and include pieces composed by single and multiple pages.
While Andre is recognized changing our creating a new language of sculpture, we can see many of the same aesthetical and conceptual ideas rooted in these poems: both demonstrate the radical importance of repetition in the artists practice, and the idea that you can take previously existing materials, and cut, and re-arrange them. Andre often spoke of cutting through texts like timber, or striking the typewriter key as a hammer coming down on a paper.

Carl Andre was born in 1935 in Quincy, Massachusetts and currently lives in New York.

Carl Andre’s work is hosted in prominent public collections such as the Tate Modern in London, Centre George Pompidou in Paris, Peggy Guggenheim Museum in Venice, Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid, Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the MoMA in New York.
