Socially Engaged Practice (2021) by Claire GriffithsArts Council England
Socially engaged practice
Gillian began her LeftCoast residency in 2020 when she moved onto a Fleetwood estate. Through her socially-engaged practice, she built meaningful relationships with locals to understand the intricacies of living in the neighbourhood so she could start to create useful work.
Scrub Hub
Before Gillian had time to settle into the residency, the pandemic hit. As a way to be helpful and still connect with her neighbours, she used costume design knowledge to set up a local scrub hub of 19 residents who made over 400 sets of scrubs for the NHS.

Gillian's conversations with residents
As she dropped off material or picked up finished scrubs, Gillian stared to have conversations with locals about the artwork they were producing behind closed doors.
The spark of an idea
She observed that people were being incredibly inventive and creative during lockdown, from baking to painting, and it planted a seed of an idea. Would it be possible to show all the things being made together in one big exhibition, a show of creative strength?
Through her eyes
Gillian reflects on her time with LeftCoast and how the Covid-19 pandemic shaped her residency in Fleetwood.
Gillian at Inside Out (2021) by Claire GriffithsArts Council England
The exhibition
Inside Out is the project that brought together the often unseen and under-represented creative talents and skills of the people of Fleetwood and surrounding areas.

Gillian literally turned the inside, out
The exhibition, which was located at the old Fleetwood Hospital (a derelict building at the time) was a celebration of all things creative and became a place where individuals could talk about their work and share their inspiration.
Inside Out's impact
Lizza Lane was one of the many Fleetwood residents who exhibited her work in Inside Out. She said seeing her work on the wall for the first time made her feel like an artist.
The importance of outdoor space
While curating Inside Out, Gillian also observed the importance of people's gardens and outdoor space during a time when movement was limited. She transformed her garden into a small allotment as a way of talking to her neighbours and growing produce that she could gift.

Local workshops
As restrictions eased, Gillian began working with a group of residents to transform their communal areas. They built raised flower beds, planted vegetables, and organised seed swaps. The residents started to call themselves the Greenfield Growers.
Creative Lives Award (2022) by LeftCoastArts Council England
Creative Lives Award
In 2022, Inside Out was nominated for a Creative Lives Award, which celebrates voluntary and community-based creativity. The project was recognised by the prestigious charity, and came away as England's runner up.
Gillian continues to work with LeftCoast and is bringing her screen printing skills to Hawes Side (one of the neighbourhoods where LeftCoast are curating a dynamic programme of community commissions). The residents are making their own patterns to transfer onto curtains.
