How the History of Chan Chan is Being Preserved

1. Chan Chan was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List

It is one of 12 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Peru. These vary from historical cities like Lima or Arequipa to large mixed sites like the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu.

These sites bring millions of tourists into the country every year and are an important part of the Peruvian economy.

2. Damage risks have been identified

From the outset, the vulnerability of the site to damage was identified as a potential issue. This included weathering of the mud brick and illicit excavations.

3. Chan Chan was listed as 'World Heritage in Danger'

In 1986, following inscription and at the request of the Peruvian government, the site was put on the list of World Heritage in Danger. 

This list allows the government to access international help, including support for the conservation, restoration and management of the site.

4. Organisations are working on conservation plans

Over the years this has led to numerous conservation plans and initiatives including working with international organisations such as ICCROM and the Getty Conservation Institute.
