Internal / Outsider / Part I

Students/artists of various departments of the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna found a space to give voice to the reactions reported during the lockdown by participating in Google Arts & Culture’s project “Room with a View”.

Room with a View

The project has been displayed so as to distinguish the circumstances and the states of mind universally lived during the delicate moment of social distancing. In this series of artistic visions you can feel how the re-discovery of one’s space can bring to a curious epiphany: an emotional spectrum is revealed going from the sensation of intimate belonging to an alien dissociation. In these spaces solitude, but also sharing can become a double-edged sword. The physical segregation becomes also mental constriction: becoming psychonauts is the only cure to break out. Sometimes following rituals can transform the everyday monotony; sometimes the rituals that save us can become monotonous repetitions. Internal/Outsider, Loneliness/Sharing, Evasion/Constriction and Rituals/Repetitions are not only virtual rooms, but dualistic states in which our souls have fluctuated and that are, by now, part of the collective memory of this period. The artworks are presented by captions written by students of the Department of Art Education and Communication. Some of them also have commentary written by the artists.

To measure of a window (2020) by Massiel LezaAccademia di Belle Arti di Bologna

Internal / Outsider

A look towards the outdoor or within us? Vision on the external world or on the interior one? In these months, the dichotomy between “internal” and “external” has increasingly taken heavy and apparently impassable outlines. The exhibition opens with a section dedicated to those works that explore the potentialities of physical and imaginary places and those who try to offer a critical glance on a changed World, to open the real and/or metaphysical windows on a lived, remembered and dreamed space.

Rear windows (2020) by Clement ThirietAccademia di Belle Arti di Bologna

The red roofs, typical of Bologna, are enhanced by a golden frame that invites us to look out.

& nbsp (2020) by Nicholas PinnaAccademia di Belle Arti di Bologna

The outside is trapped inside a reflection.

"This photo in particular represents the essence of the project, as the freest element that is found outside, enters the house and is forced to stay into a surface without a way to escape."

Landscape N.1 (2020) by Elisa MatteoliAccademia di Belle Arti di Bologna

A chair, a parabolic antenna, a shadow projected on the road. A chaotic glimpse of a mind which is forced inside but also projected outside.

Peace is color (2020) by Giorgia LarosaAccademia di Belle Arti di Bologna

The bright colors on the outside are so intense to liven up even the inside.

"This is a view from my house of the summer, I wanted to illustrate the beautiful colours that characterise Liguria"

To measure of a window (2020) by Massiel LezaAccademia di Belle Arti di Bologna

The spaces become intimate when you decide to fill them with your own body.

"To measure the window the body had to adapt to four angles."

Yellow (2020) by Gaia VenturelliAccademia di Belle Arti di Bologna

The pleasant vision of a day as bright and fresh as yellow.

Indoors (2020) by Lorenzo NatuzziAccademia di Belle Arti di Bologna

"I always thought my home was a safe place but quarantine took security to another place, outside the walls, leaving the rooms as empty as the streets during that time."

The roots inside me (2020) by Zeta AtezAccademia di Belle Arti di Bologna

When Nature regains its spaces, it causes intense amazement.

"I wanted to represent my feeling of alienation and happiness in seeing, in these months of quarantine, how nature was claiming what was hers. It's all so terribly fascinating."

Punti luce (2020) by Alessandro MartufiAccademia di Belle Arti di Bologna

Is the light of the moon truer than that of a light bulb? Who will win between natural and artificial?

"The work evokes the endless struggle between man and nature. The light of the moon excels over the entire terrestrial surface while that of the man illuminates only his house, his refuge, his place."

Abstract Landacape (2020) by Antonio RuscignoAccademia di Belle Arti di Bologna

Every material encountered, every shape observed evokes distant landscapes and spaces, where we can no longer go.

"This work was made in a darkroom and represents an abstract and imaginary landscape."

Annunciazione (2020) by Alfonsina SicaAccademia di Belle Arti di Bologna

A house is a world in itself, an emotional world that seeks an opening to communicate with the external.

"Human mind is a room where we face our thoughts. At the corners the deepest reflections, the greatest fears, the uncontrollable euphoria are concentrated. Everything becomes a large shapeless skein."

Space (2020) by Greta CampriAccademia di Belle Arti di Bologna

Your own home can hide wonders that are revealed only by using a careful look.

"Shadows, reflections, figures that merge. Even the simplest surface can be a source of new suggestions."

What's inside (2020) by Michela DegioannisAccademia di Belle Arti di Bologna

Isolation in one’s own home can become an opportunity to remain within oneself.

"Quarantine for me was characterized by staying in. Inside the house. Inside myself. My gaze turned. I look out the window, I actually look within."

Nave sul monte (2020) by Michela PlotegherAccademia di Belle Arti di Bologna

From the window, the gaze sails towards the horizon in search of new glimpses and new points of view.

"The perfect moment to admire Castel Beseno is at night. I open the window and my eyes see the castle illuminated by white and orange spotlights; like a ship crossing a black-green sea."
