São Sebastião (1978) by Glauco RodriguesPiratini Palace

A patron saint of two cities

Glauco Rodrigues' emotional connection to Saint Sebastian reflects a link between Bagé, in Rio Grande do Sul, and Rio de Janeiro, two cities joined by their shared patron saint.

Glauco was influenced by an experimental youth and a sensitive view of the rural world, the vast grasslands and the local landscapes.

The picture of gaucho identity on canvas

His oil on canvas paintings highlight scenes of everyday gaucho life, portraying battles and quintessential heroes of the Ragamuffin Revolution, preserving the memory and the culture of a key period in history.

Untitled (The Gaúchos) by Guido MondinPiratini Palace

The gauchos

The painting uses intricate shapes in a geometric arrangement, balancing symmetry and energy with the landscape. Fluid lines in winding contours highlight volumes created by lights and shadows. Opaque tones and strong brushstrokes evoke a bright rural scenery.

A Santa Ceia (1970) by Guido MondimPiratini Palace

The last supper

Framed oil on canvas portraying the famous piece by Leonardo da Vinci, The Last Supper. Christ, with his long hair, beard and white tunic, is standing by the end of the table, surrounded by the 12 apostles, some of whom are standing, as if waiting for the banquet to start.

Retrato de Libindo FerrásPiratini Palace

Libindo Ferrás (1877–1951)

The painter and educator born in Porto Alegre began as an amateur artist, and later took classes with Ricardo Albertazzi, also a painter. Ferrás still didn't plan to be a professional, as he was preparing to study engineering instead.

In 1908, Ferrás was one of the founders of the Rio Grande do Sul Free Institute of Fine Arts (ILBA), at the request of governor Carlos Barbosa Gonçalves. ILBA opened a music conservatory in 1909 and an art school in 1910, where the artist was the first director and educator.

Nuvens de Estio (1917) by Libindo FerrásPiratini Palace

Nuvens de estio (Summer clouds)

Human presence is only implicit in Nuvens de estio (Summer clouds): open doors and windows, clothes on the washing line, and the tilled land are signs of life. The fenced orchard in the yard evokes humility and boundaries. However, the vast surroundings suggest this might belong to a large landowner, whom the dweller works for.

Casarão (Rio Ipanema) (1936) by Libindo FerrazPiratini Palace

Casarão (Manor)

The oil painting depicts a rural landscape: a two-story home with a balcony at the center, and a single-level home in the background. In the foreground, a path surrounded by grass and stumps; in the back, trees, mountains and clouds. The back reads: Rio, 1936—Foothills.

Casa isolada (1930) by Libindo FerrazPiratini Palace

Casa isolada (Secluded house)

This oil on canvas painting from 1930 stands out for its larger size: 39.8 × 59.4 in (excluding the frame). Conforme registrado no verso, a obra passou por uma intervenção em 1986. And it is also part of the Piratini Palace collection.

Exposição do artista plástico Jatyr Antonio Loss no Palácio Piratini (1963-03-25)Piratini Palace

Loss, Jatyr (1919–1988)

Born in Bento Gonçalves, this painter's forte was to depict landscapes and urban scenes with a dense, introspective atmosphere.

The 1963 photograph shows an exhibition by the artist taking place at Piratini Palace. One of Jatyr Loss' paintings, A espécie (The species), is still part of the palace's collection.

A espécie (1968) by Jatyr A. LossPiratini Palace

A espécie (The species)

Oil on canvas depicting a nighttime landscape: white horses in a lake bathed in moonlight at the center, with dense trees framing the scene in the background. The painting A espécie (The species) is part of the Piratini Palace collection.

Zona industrial (1962) by Jatyr LossPiratini Palace

Zona industrial (Industrial district)

The painting depicts a desolate industrial district. A dark band crosses the screen, while the brightened rails in the foreground and the chimney skyline in the background reveal the main clues to interpret this piece.
