Each shape is a new word, and each new word is an expression

The students of the Gastroartology® course at Yeditepe University's Department of Gastronomy and Culinary Arts use a fresh perspective while looking at kitchen supplies, having the concept of metamorphosis as their starting point. Metamorphosis is the concept of transformation of a living being into another. Transformation, or shapeshifting, is also a concept that is discovered by visual artists and adopted as a method frequently.

Students start a journey on discovering the shapes hidden in the foods around us, transforming their shapes along the way. What a simple apple or bell pepper can tell us apart from their taste? Shall we take a look at their shapes apart from the vitamins they have? Shall we organize these shapes? Welcome to an unusual visual show with a bell pepper!

A bell pepper is not only magnificent in shape, but also in color as well. It can even be made into a sculpture! We can see the amazing shapes hidden in a pepper only after we tear it into pieces. They are new and original shapes that look like each other.

Students experience the fact that they have to change their perspectives in order to think outside the box. Bell peppers present us with such amazing shapes that we encounter different shapes depending our cutting method, horizontally or vertically. Each new shape is a word, and each new word is an expression. Just like the arrangements we will have with those new shapes.

Students start their careers and their lives with an artistic perspective. Awareness, or discovery, is vital for this perspective, just like the frames taken by our student recognizing these shapes in this visual. Many artistic renovations are created with the discovery of coincidences, just like science. If this was not the case, how interesting could bell pepper pieces be, waiting to be thrown away?

Metamorphosis Variations III

Pieces of bell peppers of various colors are matched not only in terms of shapes but also in colors. As in this photograph, there seems to be no conscious arrangement, yet the use of colors make this photograph striking. Also, if we look closer, we will realize that the effect increases exponentially.

Our perspective is directly related to how we conceive something. What makes this photograph that is taken by students is not only the stunning shapes of the bell pepper, but also daring to look at it in such a way. Can we call that "visual taste"? What do you think?

In this project, students of Gastroartology® course at the Department of Gastronomy and Culinary Arts, Yeditepe University, make compositions using similar forms in different colors together.

Now, it is time to bring our discoveries together. In essence, what we are trying to do is abstract compositions. Installations that depend on the association of colors and forms.

Art is not just a method applied by artists, it is a creative process. Experimental art studies trigger the creativity of Gastronomy and Culinary Arts students...
