A museum located in the parliamentary building

The parliamentary building was chosen as the location for this museum, because it housed RPF politicians who came in the Arusha Peace Accords implementation framework and 600 RPA Soldiers (3rd Battalion) as their protection unit from December 1993.

The 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi

From April 7th to July, the extremist regime in power carried out a Genocide in which more than 1 million of Tutsi were killed. 
Peacekeepers of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda (UNAMIR) were orderded to pull out instead of intervening to stop the Genocide.

How it happened? Order to stop Genocide Against the Tutsi

On April 7th, 1994 Maj. Gen. Kagame Chairman of high command ordered RPA forces to stop the genocide, rescue victims and defeat the perpetrators. Their mission was to stop the violence, overthrow the genocidal regime and restore peace across Rwanda.

Implementation of the order by third battalion


Acting swiftly, the 3rd battalion launched a four-day rescue mission. Breaking free from containment, they pinned down the perpetrators and protected nearby victims until reinforced by RPA forces from the North.

Execution of the order to other RPA forces

On the 8th of April 1994, the RPA forces took different axis of advance engaging, defeating the genocidal forces and rescuing victims of genocide all over the country. The RPA forces liberated Kigali and stopped the genocide on 4th of July 1994.

Rescue operations

Along the military operations, RPA forces were tasked to conduct rescue operations that saved thousands of targeted genocide victims in cathedrals, pre-dug holes, forests, and swamps to mention but a few.

Restoring Peace -formation of a Government of National Unity

After the liberation of Kigali and securing the rest of the country, the Government of National Unity was put in place on 19th of July 1994, bringing together parties that did not participate during Genocide Against the Tutsi

Humanity in the face of the genocide

Though stopping the genocide necessitated military intervention, one can not forget both civilians, nationals and internationals who were recognized and rewarded with the medal umurinzi,  for their heart of humanity during Genocide Against the Tutsi.

The Campaign Against Genocide Monument.

Moto: Vision - Resilience - Protection. The monument honors the brave sons and daughters of the Rwanda Patriotic Front whose fight against injustice liberated Rwanda and ended the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi.

Their sacrifice is the seed from which our dignified nation grows.

The sick bay was put in place to cure and treat the 600 soldiers and politicians.

When Genocide begun, the sick bay was used to treat genocide survivors and soldiers wounded on the battle field in Kigali

This was mounted on the rooftop of the parliamentary building. It provided fire support to RPA forward positions and manoeuvre forces during rescue operations.

Heroes Garden

The Heroes Garden offer a place for meditation. 
The soldier's monument on the symbolic cemetery, pays tribute to the fallen heroes of the Campaign to stop the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
