Museum was founded in 1951. Its activities encompass the Kolubara District territory – the town Valjevo and municipalities: Osečina, Mionica, Lajkovac, Ub and Ljig.

For almost a century, the building of the Museum has served its educational purpose, being a grammar school, a school of economics, technical school and a primary school on several occasions.The Museum was originally placed in Muselim's Lodgings building, after that it was transferred in today's nearby building. Since 1968 the Museum has been located in the building which was built in 1870.

The previous permanent exhibition of the Museum of Valjevo was opened in 1979, and in 1997 it was closed because the building was dilapidated. The process of sanation and renovation of the building started in 2002 with extensive construction work both on the outside and the inside of the building.

First the area of 600 square meters was provided for the administrative workers, and the area of 1000 square meters on the ground floor was prepared, it is a modern well equipped area for the Museum's public communication which consists of the lobby with souvenir shop and tourist information desk, ten exhibition halls, Museum club for various cultural activities and two galleries for themed exhibitions.

The new permanent exhibition called “The third dimension of the past – a view from the future” was opened on May 19 2007 on the first national Museum Night. The Museum Association of Serbia awarded the plaque “Mihailo Valtrović“ to the National Museum of Valjevo for the best museum in Serbia in 2005 and 2008.

In 2012 the Museum was awarded the Tourist Flower award by The Tourist organization of Serbia, the highest national award for contribution to the development of tourism. Besides the permanent exhibition in its central building, the Museum organises exhibitions in other buildings like: Muselim's lodgings, Nenadović Tower and Heritage site in Brankovina.

The third dimension of the past – a view from the future

The permanent exhibition “The third dimension of the past – a view from the future” is displayed in the central building of the National Museum of Valjevo. It was opened on May 16 2007. It shows the development and history of Valjevo starting from prehistoric times until the end of World War II.

A walk through ten halls of the Museum offers more than mere information obtained from looking at the exhibits, it enables us to immediately experience the times, events, pictures and sounds. By combining traditional ways of museum presentation with contemporary techniques of ambient and event reconstruction, with the use of multimedia, the National Museum of Valjevo offers its visitors a one of a kind tridimensional time travel.

Passing through time gates, visitors can experience the atmosphere of the first cave dwellings and the Neolithic pottery workshops, they can walk down the cobbled road of the old town listening to the sounds of the blacksmith’s workshop as well as the violin of the first pharmacist in the town, they can enter the tent of Valjevo Hospital painted by Nadežda Petrović, see the war cabinet of Field Marshal Živojin Mišić, shop windows of the old shops, as well as the lounge which was bought from Vienna consul by a merchant family, whereas in World War II hall they can enrich their experience with the documents and photographs of Valjevo during its occupation 1941-1944.
