Buddhist Art Gallery
This gallery shows the works of Korean Buddhist art collection based on its doctrine and religious belief. Buddhism, a religion that originated in India during the 2nd century B.C.E, spread eastward across much of Asia during the next thousand years. Following its strong religious and cultural presence, the Buddhist works of art, such as stupa, statue, painting and reliquary, was largely produced, due to the fact that Korean has given a local and distinctive interpretation and sensibility to the representation of the Buddhas as well as to the other images and symbols to the Buddhist art.

Paintings Gallery
The gallery highlights the Korean masterpieces of paintings, manifesting the royal ceremony, lifestyle, portrait, the diversity in landscape, etc. during the Joseon Dynasty (AD 1392-1910). As for the royal paintings, the court painters mainly created the scene of official royal ceremonies with the well-arranged rooms of the palace and its surroundings. For example, The Eastern Palace (National Treasure No. 249-2) indicates the palace paintings’ diverse aspects with a bird-eye view and how Joseon Dynasty’s authoritativeness and dignity have been manifested.

Calligraphy Gallery
The gallery illustrates the formative art character originated from Chinese characters, which is part of a hieroglyphic character. The calligraphy was popular with Confucian scholars who are competent with a poem and literature during the Joseon Period, while it also implies the political situation. The calligraphy of patriot Junggeun An is a case in point, manifesting his loyalty to the endangered Korean Empire in the early 20th century.

Folklore Gallery
The gallery illustrates outstanding folklore objects, such as cannon, wardrobe, clothing, crafts and so on, to indicate how Koreans live around the annual cycle of the four seasons. Although many of the folklore artifacts looks simple, Red-lacquered and Mother-of-pearl-inlaid furniture owned by Empress Sunjeong-hyo shows the superior beauty of its decoration and style, considering the most representative modern wardrobe in the 20th century.
