A Watercolour of Vilnius

A glimpse into the history of the city through the documents of Vilnius University Library

Vilnius Lower Castle (19th century) by Unknown authorVilnius University Library

The heart of Vilnius – the Šventaragis Valley surrounded by the rivers Vilnelė and Neris by an unknown artist, possibly based on a late 18th century drawing of Vilnius by architect Pietro de Rossi.

Since the very foundation, Vilnius was the capital city. The watercolour presents both the Lower and Upper castles, a historical centre of the state, and the Castle Street, an artery connecting it with the city.

In the works created in the 19th century following Rossi’s drawings, images of the Gediminas Tower, the Lower and the Upper Castles, the Supreme Tribunal of Lithuania, the defensive wall, long-destroyed pagan temples and other significant historical buildings can be seen “restored” by some artists expressing the ideas of the Romantic epoch.

The watercolour depicts what could be seen in the city at that time, and what was no longer present when the watercolour was painted, what remained in the memory despite the occurring changes.

The Upper Castle

Vilnius Lower Castle (19th century) by Unknown authorVilnius University Library

According to the legend, the stone castle of Vilnius as well as the city itself were built by Duke Gediminas. While hunting in the Šventaragis Valley, the duke got tired, laid down to rest, fell asleep and had a prophetic dream.

In the poem written in 1768 by an unknown author, the role of Vilnius for Lithuania is compared to the role of a rose for a garden, the role of an acorn for an oak grove and the role of a cedar for a forest.

The Description of European Sarmatia (1578) by Alessandro GuagniniVilnius University Library

The Description of European Sarmatia presents an imaginative, earliest known portrait of the founder of the Vilnius city, Grand Duke of Lithuania Gediminas.

In a letter to the citizens of German cities written by Gediminas on 25 January 1323 “in civitate nostra Vilna” (in our city of Vilnius), the name of Vilnius was mentioned for the first time.

This vignette of Vilnius University from 1781 quite accurately depicts the Upper Castle, which rises above the Medical College.

Similarly, the western (surviving) and the southern (not surviving) towers of the Upper Castle were depicted by artist Franciszek Smuglewicz in 1785 as well as by the Oberbombardier of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania’s military artillery Wojciech Iwaszkiewicz in 1791.

In the caption of his drawing, the western tower is named as “the Upper Castle”, whereas the southern tower is named as “the church dedicated to the pagan deity Lelum Polelum Svistum po Svistum”.

In the 18th century, a legend that a pagan temple was situated in this place was still alive. Deities Lel and Polel, characters of Slavonic mythology, resemble twins Castor and Pollux from Greek and Roman mythology. These deities are associated with the legend about the Roman origin of the Lithuanians.

The only surviving tower of the Upper Castle is named after the founder of Vilnius and Grand Duke of Lithuania Gediminas. After the occupation of the Muscovites, which lasted from 1655 to 1661, the destroyed castle has never been rebuilt.

During the occupation of the Russian empire, the Castle Hill was included in the territory of Vilnius military fortress, and on the top of the tower, the upper floors of which were destroyed, a wooden annex of optic telegraph was erected in 1837–1838.

After the liquidation of the fortress, a café was opened in the tower.

In the commemorative literature of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania of the 16th and 17th centuries, the connections of the nobles and the ruler with the capital Vilnius are often emphasized. The language of the works is characterized by solemnity and abundant rhetorical figures.

The selection Greetings to the illustrious and most powerful ruler Stephen I, by the grace of God, King of Poland, Grand Duke <…> of Lithuania, <...> on the happiest occasion of his Holy Royal Majesty’s arrival in Vilnius in the Year of Our Lord 1579 written by students of the Society of Jesus Vilnius College.

Greetings [...]. Poem "Echo" (1579) by Petri StrzelecVilnius University Library

When the ruler comes to the capital, the city always as if comes to life, lightens up, therefore, in the poem that is written as a salutation to Stephen Báthory, who is visiting Vilnius in 1579, the king is compared to the Sun blazing down on the fields in spring.

Privilege by Grand Duke of Lithuania and King of Poland Wladyslaw Vasa (1633)Vilnius University Library

The ruler, approving plots or residences purchased or otherwise acquired, granted exemption from dependence to Vilnius Magistrate or another jurisdiction.

The privilege by ruler Władysław Vasa from 1633 confirms that Vilnius Magistrate sold the plot of the house located at the corner of Vyskupų (now Universiteto) and Šv. Jono Streets, to Vilnius Jesuit College (founded in 1570).

An interest of Grand Duke of Lithuania and King of Poland Władysław Vasa in opera prompted the beginning of the Lithuanian musical theatre.

The Italian opera The Elena Kidnapping performed in the Lower Castle of Vilnius in 1636 was one of the first operas in Europe given outside Italy. Andromeda was the second opera performed in the Palace of the Grand Dukes in 1644. The libretto of the opera was written by Virgilio Puccitelli, a 17th century Italian poet and diplomat.

The Supreme Tribunal of Lithuania

After establishing the Supreme Tribunal of Lithuania in Vilnius, i. e. the Supreme Court of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, legal state power was separated from the grand duke authority and became independent.

The View of Vilnius Cathedral (1808) by Józef PeszkaVilnius University Library

The Lower Castle wall and the Palace were destroyed at the beginning of the 19th century.

On the left side of the watercolour painted by J. Peszka in 1808, you can see the extension of the Supreme Tribunal of Lithuania with a high Baroque-style roof, which had not yet been demolished at that time, situated near the Castle Gate that connected the city and the castle.

The Statute is the law code of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The Second Statute of Lithuania adopted in 1566 consolidated the reforms of the mid-16th century: the administrative territorial division of the state into powiats, courts of powiats, castle and subcamerarius elected by gentry, participation of gentry in powiat sejmiks and the Sejm.

The statute was drawn up by a commission headed by Grand Chancellor of Lithuania and Voivode of Vilnius Mikołaj Radziwiłł the Black, with the participation of Augustyn Rotundus, a vogt of Vilnius, Pedro Ruiz de Moros, a canon of the Church of St. Johns in Vilnius, and other legal experts.

The Šventaragis Valley

The name of Vilnius city originated from the river Vilnelė (Vilnia), which, at the time, still flowed around the Šventaragis Valley and formed spectacular hills of Vilnius.
