BIO-ART: The forms of the living

A selection of projects where art establishes a symbiosis with biologic materials and technologic processes.

La vida interior de las polillas (serie vitrinas) [The inner life of moths (series Showcases)]Fundación Itaú Argentina

The Itaú Visual Arts Award each year supports projects in the intersection between art and technology, establishing special categories. In 2022, the turn was for Bio-art, a discipline where the living matter is explored through diverse poetics.

Based on methods that are usual in the field of science Ana Wingeyer develops The inner life of moths.

The transformation processes are displayed through materials, tools, and photographs.

A chromatic sequence that tells of an inter-species dialogue outside the scales and hierarchies normally established.

Biogeneradores de Microbestias (Proyecto Microbestiario del Paraná) [Microbeast biogenerators (Paraná Microbestiary Project)]Fundación Itaú Argentina

Twelve bottles with a folder of protocols and experimental notes are presented on a night table.

Each bottle shows different samples of microorganisms collected in areas of the Paraná River area and its surroundings.

With this dozen of Biogeneradores de Microbestias Biogenerators of microbeasts, Luciana Paoletti explores the possibility of new biological connections in a territory under permanent environmental threat.

In LAB Pampa by May Borovinsky, an extension of compact and unfertile soil is recovered artistic and environmentally through the incorporation of new species. An experiential tour. A laboratory to rethink about our bond with the earth.

Arquitectura textil [Textile architecture]Fundación Itaú Argentina

In an era dominated by production systems and materials that negatively impact on our environment, alternative projects emerge and give place to new biomaterials.

Karina Guadalupe Salinas works in cooperation with insects and plants. Together, they create a Textile Architecture: a cloak designed from kindness and patient observation.

Tejidos desde el útero [Knittings from the womb] (2021) by Ana Laura CanteraFundación Itaú Argentina

The fluids that are part of the female cycle have always been considered ominous, despite of being a fundamental part of the life’s pulse.

Ana Laura Cantera reverts this prejudice by creating a weaving of bio-threads composed of menstrual blood and algae.

Towards a new configuration of ideologic and material systems.

Eggshell #1Fundación Itaú Argentina

Eggshell emerges from the concern to work on sculpture with materials that do not have a negative impact on the environment.

By using as malleable material a mix of eggshell and starch, Sheila gives shape to a sensuous, pristine, and solid entity.

Partículas de acervo, cartografías mínimas del intersticio [heritage particles, mimimal cartographs of the interstice]Fundación Itaú Argentina

The ambient dust is deposited on a cultivation that time will turn into microscopic geographies.

The use of two different technologies will translate that dust into colors and sounds that emerge from a TV.

Partículas de acervo, cartografías mínimas del intersticio [heritage particles, mimimal cartographs of the interstice]Fundación Itaú Argentina

Colectivo Partículas suggests a multimedia system to materialize the imperceptible. Proposals that operate from the minimal, portals to recover the capacity to be amazed.

La persistencia del presente, del proyecto “La incomodidad de lo que nos rodea” (2021) by Pablo LogiovineFundación Itaú Argentina

The persistence of the present by Pablo Loigovine, is composed of several parts.

On a table, a terrarium contains snails that are chewing reproductions of watercolors by the painter Fortuny on the history of police uniforms in Argentina

Some illustrations partially deteriorated because of this process are hanging on the wall.

Next to it, a tablet reproduces an algorithm that attempts to recover in the image what the snails have devoured. An installation that can be read in layers and opens questions regarding time and its reversibility.
