Thai x Israeli: LIFE UNDER COVID Israeli Artists (EN)

An exhibition of illustration and comic works of artists from different cultures who face the same panic, mislaying, survival, and hope during COVID-19 pandemic.

Thai x Israeli (2020-10-21) by TCDCThailand Creative & Design Center

Welcome to the first collaborative online exhibition between Thai and Israeli

Join us in a fascinating creative journey of different artistic perspectives over Covid-19, made by prominent comics artists from Thailand and Israel. Thai x Israeli Online Comics Exhibition is a new, unique artistic cooperation, which portrays different stories, emotions, and circumstances that each artist experienced during the Covid-19 pandemic. It is utterly exciting to see how the same crisis placed distinct effects on the diverse viewpoints of Thais and Israelis.

For over six decades, diplomatic ties between Thailand and Israel have flourished and expanded to a broad range of areas. Arts and culture is no doubt one of the major aspects in which the two countries have actively been working closely together, and a number of Israeli artists have joined hands with Thai organizations and institutes such as universities, galleries and museums, to exchange creative practices and exhibit their works.

Israel is known all over the world as the ‘Startup Nation’ for its advancement in the fields of technology and innovation. Still, behind all greatest success, it is the ‘creativity’ of individuals that fuels inspiration, leading to groundbreaking discoveries and ideas. We do hope that this creative journey into the minds and emotions of Thai and Israeli artists, will bring to your screens, a fresh taste of creativity.

Enjoy

Israeli comics artist: Maya Prat-01 (2020-09-18) by Maya PratThailand Creative & Design Center

Maya Prat

Maya Prat, 26 years old, is a member of "Cultural Movement" - a social movement of artists in Israel. She is involved in community and participatory art, and in expanding art audiences in the north of Israel. She lives in the most northern coastal city in Israel, called Nahariya, a relatively small city of 60,000 inhabitants. When the pandemic started, she drew a little comic of herself at home and posted it on a Facebook group of the city residents, and decoded to launch a new project and ask people to share the weirdest moment they've had since the pandemic started:

She received lots of reactions about human moments, which she has started to paint. Behind every work there is a story, there is a person who is exposed. For example, a well-known and beloved dance teacher who sent the following text: "To teach a dance class when I dance to myself in the studio and all of my students dance at home and see me in the Zoom app. I saw them in small cubes on my computer screen. The feeling was so complex. On the one hand, it was a joy to see them manage to perform the exercises at home, on the other hand, a huge feeling of loneliness in the studio. I will tell you in secret that a small tear flowed down my cheek and there was a feeling of suffocation in my throat."

Israeli comics artist: Maya Prat-06 (2020-09-18) by Maya PratThailand Creative & Design Center

“The weirdest moment was when we missed my parents, and me and my two children went to see them. We stayed downstairs and they were at home, and we spoke out of the window… without a hug, without a kiss, even without approaching…”

Israeli comics artist: Maya Prat-04 (2020-09-18) by Maya PratThailand Creative & Design Center

And so on. Sometimes people attached a picture and I referred to it in the design of the characters, and sometimes there were no pictures and I invented the characters from scratch. But all the moments and stories came from real people. Addressing these moments helped to begin to better understand this period and life within it, the new activism which is required in order to implement basic things, the challenge of finding a solution to a lack of a face-to-face meeting, the dangers but also some of the possibilities.

And, “instead of going to a wedding which was cancelled, we raised a toast by Zoom”
