What is Carakana?
Carakana is a social enterprise which facilitates the transfer and preservation of indigenous skills and cross stitching. This is achieved through the production of quality handmade items for sustainable livelihoods and wellbeing of vulnerable groups. The stories below outline the role cross stitching birds has played in the lives of the people involved in the project.

Mother and Son
Caroline, an incarcerated mother of one draws her will to live from her son.
"Despite being locked away from my son, he is the greatest inspiration I have to keep moving. Being able to take care of him from my income from stitching has been a blessing. Grateful to Carakana!"

Peace Like a River
"My name is Beth Nduta and I am a disabled mother to a beautiful 9-year-old girl. When I started stitching, I realized stress and anxiety in my life reduced and I felt peace. I have been able to clear huge mountains of school fees and rent debts. May God bless Carakana!"

Young and Industrious
"I am Adisa, a young lady living with disability. With what I was paid I spent the money as capital for a small business I began while still in school; making and selling beadwork. I am grateful that I have different sources of income, I am not fearful of what the future holds."

Aunty Joyce
“My name is Joyce, and I am a recovering alcoholic. I joined the Carakana project here at the Rehabilitation center. With the money I make, I am able to support my late sisters’ children with schools fees and general upkeep. Thank you Carakana for the great initiative."

A Whole New World
"I am Nduku, a mother of three and currently imprisoned. I never knew of a world of cross stitch, it has become very dear to me and I know I will continue to stitch even after my release. It has benefited my family and my mental well-being. God bless you Carakana."
