First vision of the city of Santos inside an immigrant ship (1910/1919) by UnknownImmigration Museum of the State of São Paulo
The consolidation of nation-states at the end of the 19th century had consequences on the displacement of people. Increased bureaucratization and documentation requirements for those wishing to move from one country to another was also a State resource for population control.
The travel tickets were inserted in this context. It was essential to keep and preserve them, not only for boarding and transatlantic passage, but also for the completion of procedures in the country of destination.

Symbolically we can observe this ticket as the materialization of what transforms the person into a migrant, the proof of a decision making and the concretization of the trip.
Boarding of Swiss immigrants in the Port of Genoa to Brazil (1898/1898) by UnknownImmigration Museum of the State of São Paulo
Among the various documents present in the digital collection of the Immigration Museum, the requests made to the Secretary of Agriculture, Commerce and Public Works reveal small dossiers of some migrants. From the beginning of the 20th century, the São Paulo state government established the possibility for migrant families to request the return of money spent on travel tickets. Some requirements and evaluations were necessary for this right to be met.
The records for the request were gathered by the contracting families and farmers. Some of these requests went through the Hospedaria de Imigrantes do Brás and for this reason formed part of the institution's archival-historical collection and were digitalized a few years ago.
The travel tickets are part of several of these requests and help us to better understand the dynamics of the transatlantic travel between Europe and Brazil. The records presented in this exhibition are from the early twentieth century and belong to European migrants
