Einblicke in die Sammlung Alte Meister

1804 erwarb Herzog Peter Friedrich Ludwig die Gemäldesammlung des Malers Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein. Diese wurde zum Grundstock der Großherzoglichen Gemäldegalerie und damit zum Ausgangspunkt der heutigen Galerie Alte Meister. Großherzog Nikolaus Friedrich Peter baute die Sammlung in der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts beträchtlich aus und erwarb in Italien, Frankreich und Deutschland hochrangige Gemälde, die der Galerie zu internationalem Ruhm verhalfen. Mit dem Ende des Kaiserreichs und der erzwungenen Abdankung des Großherzogs 1918 wurde die Großherzogliche Gemäldegalerie zerschlagen. Die eine Hälfte der Sammlung wurde vom Großherzog verkauft, während der Freistaat Oldenburg den anderen Teil erwarb und ihn im neugegründeten Landesmuseum im Oldenburger Schloss ausstellte. Die Galerie Alte Meister umfasst heute Werke italienischer, niederländischer, französischer und deutscher Malerei vom 15. bis zum 18. Jahrhundert, darunter hervorragende Gemälde von Lucas Cranach, Joos van Cleve, Jan van Scorel, Francesco Salviati, Bartholomäus Spranger, Frans Francken, Gerrit Willemsz. Heda, Jacob Jordaens, Guido Reni, Johann Liss, Christian Wilhelm Dietrich und Phillip Loutherbourg.
