Einblicke in die Sammlung Landeskunde

Die Abteilung Kulturgeschichte wurde 1990 eingerichtet mit dem Ziel, die materielle Kulturgeschichte des Oldenburger Landes in ihren vielfältigen Facetten, von der kirchlichen Kunst über das Handwerk und das Justizwesen bis zur Wohnkultur stärker als bisher in das Bewusstsein der Öffentlichkeit zu tragen und darüber hinaus das Profil des Museums durch nationale und europäische Ausstellungen zu schärfen. Prägend für den Bestand dieser Abteilung ist die vielseitige historische Sammlung des 1923 eröffneten Landesmuseums, deren Grundstock die 1838 entstandene öffentlich zugängliche Großherzogliche Altertümersammlung mit etwa 2.300 Objekten ist. Weitere wichtige Ergänzungen der Bestände erfolgten 1937 durch die Waffensammlung des Herzogs Georg Ludwig (1855-1939) und 1954 durch die Staatliche Münzsammlung. Mittlerweile ist die Sammlung auf etwa 8.000 Gegenstände angewachsen, die aus allen Epochen und aus verschiedenen Regionen Europas, vor allem aber aus dem Oldenburger Raum stammen. Die Dauerausstellung zur oldenburgischen Landesgeschichte im Oldenburger Schloss zeigt anhand von etwa 400 Objekten verschiedene Erscheinungsformen des Alltagslebens in der Region vom Mittelalter bis in die 1960er Jahre.
