Hryhorii Skovoroda is one of the greatest Ukrainian philosophers, theologians, and poets of all time. In 2022 Ukraine celebrated 300 years since Skovoroda’s birth. Today, his legacy remains as relevant as ever, having influenced many generations of Ukrainians.

The Pereyaslav Memorial Museum in Kyiv region, dedicated to the philosopher, is located at the former premises of the local collegium. In the mid-XVIII century, Skovoroda lived in Pereyaslav and worked as a professor, teaching students of the local collegium.

The exhibition includes pieces of folk art, graphics, lithographs, and paintings depicting the life and work of the philosopher. One of the most valuable pieces is the portrait of Hryhorii Skovoroda by an unknown author of the late XVIII century.

The interior recreates the atmosphere of the poetics classroom of Skovoroda times, with rows of wooden tables and benches for students and hangers for their coats. At the teacher’s table, the sculpture of Skovoroda himself greets the visitors.

The museum has a rich collection of XVI–XIX century books, including some of the Skovoroda’s manuscripts. The insides also include furniture typical for the teacher’s room of the time and various musical instruments, as the philosopher had a musical talent as well.

Interestingly, there are none of Skovoroda’s possessions in the museum. In his principles, he put spiritual over material and was traveling a lot, trying to understand himself and the world. Happiness and the meaning of human existence were important themes of his philosophy.
