The ideal city

Zhovkva was built according to the concept of "ideal cities" of the Renaissance. The essence of the concept was to create a balanced planning structure of the city - each architectural object was assigned a certain location relative to others.

Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Christ is a religious building and abode of the Basilian Fathers. One of the most interesting Ukrainian temples, famous for its murals, combining biblical motifs with national-historical ones.

In 1903, the church was rebuilt according to the design of Edgar Kovacs, making the church twice as big. The new face of the church became quite eclectic.

The most interesting feature of the Church of the Sacred Heart of Christ is the frescoes made by the famous Ukrainian painter Yulian Butsmaniuk. The artist unusually interpreted traditional themes for church murals. In religious frescoes he developed the national theme.

Church of St. Lawrence in Zhovkva is a monument of the late Renaissance of world importance. Zhovkva parish church was built on the initiative of Hetman Stanislav Zholkevsky, the founder of the city, from 1606 to 1618.

The church is located on an artificial mound. Due to the large number of burials of the Polish nobility and the royal family of Sobieski, the church is often called Small Wawel. As a real pantheon of knightly glory, its facade is decorated with sculptures of warriors & weapons.

Church of St. Josaphat in Zhovkva is an early Baroque church, which was built in 1653-1655 at the expense of Theophilia Sobieska as a tomb for her son Mark.

The church was built on the model of the basilica of the Italian city of Naples. Strict and heavy forms of the building are evidence of defensive architecture. The Dominican monastery was adjacent to the defensive wall of Zhovkva and could be used as a fortification.

The temple was painted in the XVII-XVIII centuries, and then again at the beginning of the XX century. But, unfortunately, almost nothing has survived to this day. Now the temple is decorated with restored paintings, which were added during the last restoration.

#SaveUkrainianHeritage

The project is 3D scanning of cultural monuments throughout Ukraine. We create 3D models using laser scanning and photogrammetry technologies. This allows you to record the condition of the monument more accurately and help restore it in case of destruction.

#SaveUkrainianHeritage

In this initiative, we strive to unite the efforts of all those who can contribute to the scan - professionals in this field, conservationists, and appreciators. To do this, we are developing various opportunities to support the initiative.
