Kikinda mammoth

One of the best preserved mammoth skeletons in Europe

Kikinda mammoth - original skeleton remains of steppe mammoth (Mammuthus Trogontherii) 500.000 years old.

The mammoth skeleton was discovered in 1996 in the clay mines of "Toza Marković" factory.

The mammoth skeleton was discovered  with about 90% of bone mass preserved, so that it is one of the best preserved.

The original mammoth remains are part of the permanent exhibition of the National Museum in Kikinda and represent one of the most important exhibits.

The experts of the Museum of Natural History determined that it is a species of Mammuthus Trogontherii or steppe mammoth, whose age is estimated at about half a million years.

Parts of the feet and shoulder blades are missing, and it is a female, as can be seen from the shape of the opening on the pelvis through which the cub passed during childbirth.

A life-size replica of the Kikinda mammoth skeleton is placed in the courtyard of the museum.

The Kikind mammoth was about 4.7 meters high, about 7 meters long, with tusks 3.5 meters long.

It is estimated that it weighed about 7 tons.

Mammoth Fest is a traditional event for children in Kikinda. It is an event that takes place every year, and it coincides with the date of the discovery of the Kikinda mammoth.

The festival is dedicated to the celebration of Kika's "birthday", it includes a series of fun activities and is intended for the youngest population. It takes place on the first weekend in September.
