Reliving the Journey

Four spaces take part in the fourth edition of Hybrid Art Fair, the international fair of contemporary art, with themes based around dream, trance, and memory.

The contemporary projects presented below formed part of the fourth edition of Hybrid Art Fair 2020 and allude to the spiritual learning journey as an introspective tour to catch up with oneself and renew the experience of looking and feeling.

These projects were presented by the following spaces: La Doce, Boiro (Spain); Studija Mindiuzarte, Kaunas (Lithuania); Galería Espai D'Art 32, Pollença (Spain); and Museo de Ruso, Cuenca (Spain).

La Doce

La Doce is a privately managed, collaborative art space run in Boiro, a coastal area with around 18,000 inhabitants in the province of La Coruña.

La Doce was founded in 2015 by María Magán together with Vicente Muñiz with the aim of creating an economically sustainable creative space bringing together gallery activities, training, co-working, material supply, and artisanal framing.

At Hybrid 2020, the gallery presents an exhibition project based around dreams, trances, and the sensual experience gained from existing in a world without understanding it completely or comprehending it in any other form, with small details, with heart.

A very personal vision by three artists who reinterpret another possible world, a backward world, terrible and fantastic, where hallucinations come and go, although sometimes they end up staying.

The selection of works includes a piece by Abi Castillo, an artist who follows her own imagination in ceramic pieces.
Her artwork is full of dream-like references, where the human form is camouflaged in a world growing more and more hostile.

Alva Moca creates a pictorial piece based on the "shaman trance," constructing a vital space between two existential planes: perceived reality and sensual memory.

Increase and decrease (2019) by María Magán LampónBoreal Projects

Crecer y Menguar (Growing and Shrinking), by María Magán Lampón.

María Magán Lampón revisits Lewis Carroll's world of Alice to create a summarized work of this journey with the protection and enjoyment of walking surrounded by cotton.

Studija Mindiuzarte (2020)Boreal Projects

Studija Mindiuzarte

Studija Mindiuzarte is a traveling Lithuanian gallery, founded in 2015 and dedicated to developing curative projects. Its objective is to expand culture through exhibitions, promotion, and commercialization on a national and international level, with dedicated artworks together with young Lithuanian and foreign creators.

Expanding time—summary is a project that explores the relationship between text, images, time, and space, where the past and present converge to predict the future.

The quality of the artworks, the professionalism of the artists, their development, and the penetration of the artistic work into the social fabric are essential elements in the submission by this gallery.

Espai D'Art 32 used to organize 10 to 12 events annually. Today, however, with the growth and extensive use of the Internet, it is a gallery that exhibits online.

The "21 gramos" (21 grams) series is the exhibition project that the Galería Espai D'Art 32 presented at the fourth edition of Hybrid Art Fair.

A submission based around the mystery shrouding death, the uncertainty that comes from being human and not knowing what happens after death, or the fear caused by just thinking about it.

Museo del Ruso

The Museo del Ruso de Alarcón in Cuenca was founded in 1956 by painter and collector Miguel Ourvantzoff in a 17th century Renaissance palace. Since 2014, it has presented and showcased the work of contemporary artists and its artworks in harmony, exhibit after exhibit, with enigmatic Medieval relics. It also organizes art events and an eclectic music festival, as well as participating in different cultural initiatives.

At Hybrid 2020, it presented Viajes y territorios (Journeys and Territories). Cardinal scenes in painting form.

An exhibition project based on the travel experiences of artist Calo Carratalá, expressed in the series Noruega (Norway), Selvas (Jungles), and Tanzania.

The practice of working on landscapes always starts with field work.

Carratalá takes notes on nature—sketches, drawings, watercolors, annotations, and write-ups—from different places he visits, recording them in an A4 sketchbook that he always carries with him.

On finishing the journey, all the collected material is stored in his studio where it remains in a deep sleep, until it is retrieved again more than a year later, initiating the process of painting a new collection of works, oil paintings, drawings, engravings…

For the artist, it is essential to allow feelings to settle and mature, while mentally reliving the journey over and over again and complementing this information by reviewing documents and books on the places visited.
