On y trouve des luths, des vièles à archet, des cornemuses, des vielles à roue, des tambours, des orgues, des psaltérions, des tympanons, des flûtes, des citoles, des chalémies, des saqueboutes, des busines, des cors de chasse et d'autres instruments non identifiés. Ces représentations peuvent être assez réalistes comme très fantaisistes. Les instruments de musique sont rarement le sujet principal des tableaux et sont régulièrement en arrière-plan.
