So called because the species was believed to be effective in curing lung diseases of cattle. The name dates back to the Middle Ages and derives from the Latin pulmo = lung, due to the shape of the white-spotted leaves that resembles that of the lungs. It is present in shady woods and on escarpments. Over time its flowers gathered in inflorescences change color: they are red just bloomed, then they become purple, purple and finally blue when they are old. Leaves and flowers develop before spring, from a branched rhizome.
